Michigan Builders, Do You Know How to Renew?

All Michigan builder and maintenance and alteration license renewals must be completed online through the state of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). You may complete your continuing education anytime between now and May 31st but you cannot renew your license until March 1st.

How to renew your Residential Builder license online:

  1. Complete your state required Continuing Competency
    All Builders must complete continuing competency every renewal cycle.
    – Builders licensed for less than 6 years need 21 hours
    – Builders licensed for more than 6 years need 3 hours
  2. After March 1st, follow this link to the LARA renewal page: https://aca3.accela.com/LARA/Default.aspx
  3. Complete online renewal form & pay $150 renewal fee
    The $150 renewal fee must be paid by credit card or electronic check online at the time of renewal. Prepaid credit cards are available at most grocery stores and gas stations for any individuals who do not own credit cards or are uncomfortable paying by electronic check.

  2. Complete online renewal form & pay $150 renewal fee

Note Renewals completed after May 31st but before July 1st will incur an additional $20 late fee.

Do I need to buy books?

What can I expect from the State Exam:

The exam is comprised of two main parts:

Part 1 - Business and Law Exam – There are 50 questions on the exam, and you must answer at least 36 of them correctly in order to pass. The minimum passing score is 72%. You are allowed 75 minutes to complete the exam.

Part 2 - Trades Exam – The Trades Exam is different for the Individual Residential Builder and the Maintenance & Alteration licensing:

  • Residential Builder Trades Exam – There are 100 questions on the Residential Builder exam, and you must answer at least 73 questions correctly in order to pass. The minimum passing score is 73%. You are allowed 150 minutes to complete the exam.
  • Maintenance & Alteration Trades Exam – A separate trade exam is required for each trade you wish to be licensed in. Each trade exam ranges from 25 to 50 questions. Please click on the link below for the PSI candidate information bulletin.
