Continuing Competency Classroom Courses

As an experienced Builder or M&A Contractor, you're probably already familiar with your local Menards. Now, you can complete some or all of your continuing education (CE) requirements there, too.

CE Requirements

  • Three hours covering state building codes, laws and safety if licensed for more than six years.
  • Those who have been licensed for less than six years need 21 hours in total. Three must cover the state building codes, laws and safety topics, while the other 18 are electives.

Our classes begin at 9:00 AM ET. Check out the schedule below to find a Builders License Training Institute 3-hour Continuing Competency class hosted at a Menards near you. All mandatory instruction related to code, law, and safety is based on the current state building code regulations.

    60-Hour Prelicense Classroom Courses

A major step of the licensing application process involves completing 60 hours of approved prelicensure education. We offer a six-day, 10-hour fast-track classroom curriculum that covers everything you need to know for the license exam. Our classes begin at 7:30 AM ET to help you make the most of your day.

We highly recommend bringing the following to each class:

    • A calculator, highlighter, and something to write with
    • The Michigan Residential Code and Carpentry & Building Construction code books

Note: The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs says that missing any amount of classroom instruction means you do not get credit. That means you cannot be late to or miss any classes.

Course bundles include access to our comprehensive online exam prep program.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose between an in-person or online class?

In-person classroom courses offer less flexibility but more interactivity. While limited to a specific time and place, you are able to ask questions and discuss topics with other learners.

Our online courses present the same material but with a self-paced format. The lectures are pre-made, but you can start and stop anytime and complete lessons around your schedule.

What should a builder consider when choosing an in-person class?

We recommend that you only consider classes offered by a state-approved provider like Builders License Training Institute. That way, your time spent in class will count toward state licensing requirements.

    Other tips include:

    • Look for classes that are taught by licensed experts who can share their own on-the-job experiences
    • Pick a provider dedicated to providing courses in as many convenient locations as possible (that's why we partnered with Menards!)

What should I do after finishing a class?

Whether renewing your license or applying for one, you'll need proof that you completed your required training.

We provide official certificates of completion that you can use to complete the renewal process or apply for your MI builder license.
