West Virginia Contractor FAQs

The following steps must be completed before a contractor license is issued:

1. Register for your examination(s), complete the examination registration form and submit the form with your examination fee to:

You will receive an admission notice from testing agent 7 to 10 days prior to the examination date you select.

2.  Prepare for and take your examination.  Scores will automatically be reported to the Contractor Licensing Board within two business days of your examination.

3.  Once you have successfully completed your examination(s), you must mail the completed affidavit form and licensing fee of $90 to the West Virginia Contractor Board.  The affidavit certifies that your firm is registered and in compliance with:
a.  Workers Compensation – Office of the Insurance Commissioner’s Employer Coverage Unit:  (304) 558-6279
b.  Secretary of State (if applicable):  (304) 558-8000
c.  State Tax Department:  (304) 558-3333
d.  Wage Bonding (if applicable):  (304) 558-7890 Ext. 162
e.  Workforce West Virginia Unemployment Compensation Division:  (304) 558-2451

Once you complete your examination(s), submit license application paperwork and license fee payment to:

Yes, all first-time licensees must pass both a Business and Law test and a Trade test (if applicable) for the license being sought.

Contractor licenses renew each year at the date listed on the license. No continued education is required at this time.

YES!

When you pass the NASCLA Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors, you will be listed in the NASCLA National Examination Database. You will then have this information available for the following states which accept the NASCLA Accredited Examination: AL, AR, GA, LA, MS, NV, NC, OR, SC, TN, UT, US Virgin Islands, VA, and WV. You may also need to take each states’ specific business/law/project management exam in addition to the NASCLA exam.
