Earning your CE credits doesn't have to be complicated. Our fully online, state-approved Florida Building Code courses are the fastest, easiest way to earn your required CE without the classroom or the guesswork.
This 14-credit package meets requirements for building code administrators, building inspectors, plan examiners, code compliance officers, and construction inspectors.
Building inspectors are usually employed by county or municipal governments, although some work in the private sector. Regardless of the employer, all inspectors must be licensed and need to complete CE to remain licensed. Operating without a license is illegal and could subject you to administrative fines.
The FL Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB) defines a “building code inspector” as an employee of a local government or state agency with responsibilities for building construction regulation.
They conduct inspections of building construction projects that require permitting, indicating compliance with every different construction code as required by state law or municipal or county ordinance.
Building code inspectors are classified into the following categories:
Note:
If you were initially licensed less than 12 months before your first renewal, no CE is required.
If you were licensed more than 12 months before your first renewal, seven hours of CE are required, which shall include a minimum of one hour in accessibility.
This online training program breaks down the latest code changes into real-world takeaways that you can use on the jobsite. All courses are state-approved and include content developed by experienced building professionals.
We also update our courses annually to match the latest Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) requirements.
Every 100% online course is available 24/7 from any device. Lessons are presented using different formats to accommodate various learning styles. Video, audio, and printable text courses are all utilized.
Once you finish your 14 hours of CE, you can renew using the DBPR Online Services portal or print and mail a renewal form. DBPR will send you a renewal reminder 90 to 120 days before the expiration date. They use whatever email address is linked to your account, so make sure it's up to date.
If renewing online, simply log in to or create your account and follow the onscreen instructions and pay the $5 renewal fee.
If you mail your renewal form, please allow four to six weeks for processing. You can check the status of your application anytime online.
Make checks and money orders payable to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation or “DBPR.”
Mail your renewal and payment to:
Department of Business and Professional Regulation
Central Intake and Licensure Unit
2601 Blair Stone Road
Tallahassee, FL 32399-0783
If you have an inactive license, you must submit a written reactivation request (form BCAIB-6) with a $5 fee and proof of completing the 14 hours of required CE.
Active licensees can request to make their license inactive using the renewal application.
Note: You cannot perform your work with an inactive license.
Failing to renew before the expiration date creates a delinquent license status. You may still follow the same renewal process with a delinquent license, but the renewal fee increases to $30.
Failure to renew within the next licensing cycle makes your license null and void in the eyes of DBPR. To become licensed again, you must meet the current eligibility requirements and reapply with a new application.
If an illness or economic hardship caused you to miss a deadline and made your license null and void, you can petition the DBPR for reinstatement without reapplying.
A provisional license is a certificate for new employees or someone new to the position. It is valid for two years and does not require CE.
Unlike the initial certification process, renewing your building inspector license does not require passing the Florida Principles and Practice exam.
Inspectors who renew with an active status will receive an email copy of their new license. To save time and resources, DBPR no longer prints and mails licenses.
You may print your license at any time using your DBPR Online Services account.
Yes, creating a DBPR Online Services account makes it easy to update your address, phone number, and email address at any time.
You can also submit a change in writing by mail or fax to:
