Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to complete the course?

  • The Utah Contractor License Exam courses take approximately 8 hours each, but we move rapidly through the materials. For a thorough review, you may want to allow twice that amount of time.

Once you register, you have up to 6 months before your course is deactivated. If you need longer, just give us a call and we can arrange an extension.

How do I get my Utah contractor license?

STEP ONE – The first step in getting licensed is passing the Business Law exam and the exam for the type of license you are seeking. You must pass the required exams prior to submitting your application to the State of Utah. The exams are taken through PSI Examination Services.

STEP TWO – The exam can be taken at any of the PSI testing locations: Hurricane, North Orem, North Salt Lake City, or Sunset.

STEP THREE – Once you’ve passed the exam, you will send your passing score, license application, and your work experience documentation to the State of Utah. The license application packet and instructions for completing the application are included with our course. The application will need to be mailed to:

Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL)
P.O. Box 146741
Salt Lake City, Utah 84111
(801) 530-6628
Or visit their website at:
http://dopl.utah.gov/

You can also submit the application in person to their office at 160 East 300 South, 1st Floor, Salt Lake City, UT 84111

Your exam results do not expire.

Is work experience required in order to get licensed?

Yes. In the past 10 years, a minimum of two years of full-time related experience is required. If you are seeking a license for general, residential or small commercial building, one of the two years of the full-time related experience must be in a supervisory or managerial position.

For more information, please visit the Utah website regarding R156-55a-302b. Qualifications for Licensure – Experience Requirements.

Is Utah contractor continued education required?

Electricians: Sixteen hours of Continuing Education each licensing period. Twelve hours must be “Core” education and the remaining four can be “Professional” or “Core” related Licensing Cycle ends November 30th of even years (2012, 2014, 2016…)

Renewal will be not be permitted until Continuing Education is completed and uploaded to the Utah State registry. To check your completed Continuing Education hours, go to http://www.utah.gov/ce-public.

You must select CE courses that are approved by the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL). All of the Builders License Training Institute courses have been approved. Student completion results are now reported daily to the State of Utah. It takes 24-48 hours for the results to show up on the DOPL web site.

We submit your completion results to the DOPL and provide you with a Certificate of Completion for your records. We also keep your records on file for you at no charge. It’s that easy!

Does Utah have reciprocity with any other states?

The State of California (CSLB) has formal reciprocity agreements with the contractor licensing agencies of Arizona, Nevada and Utah. Because the Board believes reciprocity among respective licensing programs is a valuable benefit, it offers reciprocity in specified classifications where the scopes of practice and licensing requirements are either identical or fundamentally indistinguishable in each state.

The following reciprocity requirements are the same for all three states:

  • The contractor must be applying for a license in a classification that appears on that state’s Reciprocal Classifications List;
  • The contractor must have held an active license in good standing in one of the reciprocal states for the previous five years; and
  • The contractor must submit to CSLB a Request for Verification of License form that is completed by the licensing entity under which he or she already is licensed.

If the applicant is granted reciprocity, CSLB may waive the trade portion of the exam, but retains the right to require the exam. The applicant still will be required to take the business law portion of CSLB’s exam.

If a California contractor wants to apply for reciprocity in another state, he or she must ask CSLB to complete and forward a Request for Verification of License form to the reciprocal licensing agency.

For more information on CSLB’s Reciprocity Program, please contact the Licensing Information Center at (800) 321-CSLB (2752).
