Michigan Plumber Pre-License Requirements


Apprentice Plumber

Complete the Plumbing Apprentice Registration form.

Journeyman Plumber Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Has not less than 3 years experience as a registered plumbing apprentice in the practical installation of plumbing under the supervision of a licensed authorized master plumber.
  • Must pay the examination fee and pass the examination.
  • Must pay the license fee.

Master Plumber Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have 4,000 hours experience in work as a journey plumber over a period of not less than 2 years immediately preceding the date of the application.
  • Must pay the examination fee and pass the examination.
  • Must pay the license fee.

Plumber Contractor Requirements

  • Must either hold a master plumber license or employ the holder of a master plumber license as his or her representative.
  • Must be an owner of a sole proprietorship or partnership, or an officer of a corporation or limited liability company.
  • Must provide complete business or employment information for the previous 5 years.
  • Must pay the examination fee and pass the examination.
  • Must pay the license fee.

Renewal Cycle: Journey, apprentice registration, and plumbing affidavit expire annually

Master plumber and Plumbing Contractor triennially.

Renewal Deadline: April 30th

How Do I Get A Plumbers License In Michigan?

Step 1 – Complete the experience requirements for the level of license you are going to test for.

Step 2 – Fill out the required application for Examination for the level of licensure you are seeking. Found here.

Step 3 –  Take and pass the required Plumbers examination appropriate to your desired level of licensure.

Step 4 – All scores are mailed simultaneously after grading and board approval. Successful candidates receive a license after payment of the initial license $40.00 fee.

Journeyman Plumber Exam – Exam Bulletin

                Two Parts – Must score a minimum of 70% on all parts of the exam to pass.

    1. Written – 100 multiple choice questions answered on a machine-graded form. The questions are based upon drainage systems, general knowledge, fixtures, water/backflow protection, storm/special waste, testing, inspections, and venting.
    2. Isometric Workbook – 50 multiple choice questions answered on a machine-graded form

 

Master Plumber Exam – Exam Bulletin

                Two Parts – Must score a minimum of 70% on all parts of the exam to pass.

    1. Written – 100 multiple choice questions answered on a machine-graded form. The questions are based upon drainage systems, general knowledge, fixtures, water/backflow protection, storm/special waste, testing and inspections, venting, and knowledge of the State Plumbing Act, 2002 PA 733.
    2. Building Practical – 4 to 5 story building drawing on a 17½” x 23½” sheet, drawn to scale. The applicant is to provide the sanitary and storm lines, sizing, venting, sump, cleanouts, and water supply system information in accordance to code.

 

Plumbing Contractor Exam – Exam bulletin

Overview of the examination – 50 multiple choice questions answered on a machine-graded form conducted for two hours. Must score at least a 70% to pass.

The questions are designed to test an individual’s knowledge of the State Plumbing Act, 2002 PA 733; Stille-DeRossett-Hale Single State Construction Code Act, 1972 PA 230; and the administrative and enforcement procedures of the Michigan Plumbing Code

How Do I Renew My Plumbers License?

The state will mail out license renewal information 3 months before license expiration. All of the information for renewal will be included in this packet. If you do not receive the renewal information, you can call the state and request the information be sent again.

Renewal Fees – licensed plumbers have within 60 days of expiration to renew their license.

Renewal fees are as follows
If an applicant is requesting renewal of a license within 3 years after the license is expired, does not need to go through reexamination. The applicant will only need to pay the renewal and reinstatement fees for each year that the license was not renewed.

Does Michigan have Plumbers Reciprocity with other states?

At this time, Michigan does not have reciprocity with any other states.
