Who needs to be licensed in Mississippi?

A Residential Builders license is required for any new residential construction over $50,000 that is three stories or less. Commercial work less than 7500 square feet is also allowed under this license. Those performing Residential Remodeling or Roofing over $10,000 will need a Residential Remodeling or Roofing license.

Do I need Insurance?

Effective January 25, 2013, all residential builders and remodelers will be required to provide a certificate of insurance evidencing current coverage of general liability insurance.

How do I get my contractor license in Mississippi?

Take and pass the Trade and Business/Law parts of the Residential builders licensing exam. Testing is through PSI Examination Services, PSI: 1-800-733-9267,  www.psiexams.com

How long does it take to complete the courses?
  • The Mississippi Exam Prep courses take approximately 8 hours each, but we move rapidly through the materials.  For a thorough review, you may want to allow twice that amount of time.
  • The NASCLA Accredited Commercial Contractor Course should take at least 24-30 hours.

Once you register, you have up to 6 months before your course is deactivated.  If you need longer, just give us a call and we can arrange an extension.

What is on the Exams?

Questions are taken at random from a pool of over 1,000 questions.

Business and Law Exam Content – there are 50 questions on the exam and you are allowed 2 hours.
You must get at least 36 questions correct.

NASCLA – Accredited Exam Content –

The NASCLA-Accredited exam consists of 115 questions and you must get 81 answers correct. You will have 330 minutes to complete the exam. The subjects covered in the exam are listed below, however, the questions are taken at random from a large pool of questions making sure that all contractors are taking a different exam.

  • Project Construction- 32 questions
  • Project Closeout – 9 questions

How much does it cost to take these exams through PSI?

Is contractor continued education required in Mississippi?

Yes. Contractors are required to complete two (2) hours of approved continuing education each year. This new requirement went into effect July 1, 2015.

You must have your Mississippi contractor continuing education completed prior to your license renewal date, which is the last day of the twelfth month from your issuance date.

Is the NASCLA Accredited Commercial Contractor license accepted in Mississippi?


When you pass the NASCLA Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors, you will be listed in the NASCLA National Examination Database. You will then have this information available for the following states which accept the NASCLA Accredited Examination: AL, AR, GA, LA, MS, NV, NC, OR, SC, TN, UT, US Virgin Islands, VA, and WV. You may also need to take each states’ specific business/law/project management exam in addition to the NASCLA exam.

Does Mississippi require a General contractor (commercial contractor) license?

Yes, if you are doing a privately funded job over $50,000.00 per job or a publicly funded job over $50,000.00 per job you will have to have a state contractor’s license. For anything that falls below that amount, you will have to contact the city or county wherever you will be doing the job and meet their requirements.
