Massachusetts Code Official FAQ:

Building Code Officials are required to complete 45 hours of continuing education credits every 3 years.

30 hours must be Category 1 (10 per year)

15 hours in any combination of Category 1 or 2

Category 1: Covers materials that are considered directly pertinent to the job functions of a building code enforcement official. An example would be courses on The Massachusetts State Building Code.

Category 2: Category 2 credits may come from any of the following 5 sources:

  1. Continuing education delivered, offered or sponsored by an accredited academic institution.
  2. Continuing education delivered, offered or sponsored by the International Code Council (ICC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) or other approved professional organization.
  3. Attendance at, and\or participation in, monthly meetings sponsored by the Massachusetts Building Commissioners and Inspectors Association, the Southeastern Massachusetts Building Officials Association, the Building Officials of Western Massachusetts, MetroWest Building Officials of Massachusetts or other approved building code enforcement officials’ organizations.
  4. Instructors of continuing education meeting the requirements of this policy may be approved for credit for having prepared and instructed said continuing education. (Maximum of 10 hrs)
  5. On-line and webinar presentations available through The International Code Council (ICC) or other recognized companies.

Building Inspectors and Building Commissioners shall have had at least five years of experience in the supervision of building construction or design or as an alternative, at least a four year undergraduate degree in a field related to building construction or design or shall have any combination of education and experience so determined by the Board of Building Regulations and Standards which would confer equivalent knowledge and ability. In addition, such person shall have had a general knowledge of the quality and strength of building materials; a general knowledge of the accepted requirements for building construction, fire prevention, light, ventilation, safe exits and the requirements of section thirteen A of chapter twenty-two and the rules and regulations promulgated pursuant thereto pertaining to accessible design standards; and a general knowledge of other equipment and materials essential for safety, comfort, and convenience of the occupants of a building or structure."

Local inspectors shall have had at least five years of experience in the supervision of building construction or design or in the alternative a two year associate degree in a field related to building construction or design or shall have any combination of education and experience so determined by the Board of Building Regulations and Standards which would confer equivalent knowledge and ability. In addition, such person shall have a general knowledge of the quality and strength of building materials; a general knowledge of the accepted requirements for building construction, fire prevention, light, ventilation and safe exits; and a general knowledge of other equipment and materials essential for safety, comfort, and convenience of the occupants of a building or structure."

Applicants must successfully take all requisite examinations for the category sought.
