COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is an informational course to prepare for the state examination for the Tennessee Residential and Small Commercial Contracting license. This course guides you through the exam registration and license application process, as well as what you must know to pass all three exams. We cover all areas of the exam thoroughtly, including the types of questions and math skills you will need to know.
The state exams consist of 50 questions on the Business/Law portion of the exam (120 minutes to complete) and 100 questions for the residential building portion (270 minutes to complete). You will need to get a 73% on each part to pass the exam.
Business and Law --- You must study the law and general business information. We will provide a copy of the parts of the law that will be included on the exam. Be sure to read the underlined parts at least twice. We will also include many sample questions similar to the type that are asked on the exam.
Building Practices --- We provide text, sample questions and illustrations pertaining to the exam, including the International Residential Code Compliance List. It is important that you also review the Glossary of Terms at the end of our training materials. You will be tested on terms and definitions.
Use the materials we provide as a guide to the type of questions you will find on the exam. If you have trouble understanding some of the topics or procedures when studying for the exam, we recommend reviewing a good reference book. The books that we have found to be the most beneficial when studying are Carpentry & Building Construction by Mark and John Feirer; the Contractors' Guide to Business, Law and Project Management; and the International Residential Building Code Book by the International Code Council, Code of Federal Regulations and, if you are including the small commercial license, the International Building Code book. All of these books are available in the class or through this website. Just click on "BOOKS" above.
