Full 60 hours:  Two evenings and Saturday for four weeks (14 to 16 hours per week) .   Don't miss work or take up your vacation time.   The two-week program is generally held Monday through Thursday, 9am until 4:30pm.  Some programs may vary on the days. By registering for all 60 hours at once, you will be saving $61.  A complete itinerary will be sent to all students with their books and course materials.  (Below is a sample itinerary for a four-week program.)

****The State of Michigan requires these 42 hours of specific education be included in the 60 hour program in order to complete the certification.

Effective June 1, 2008
, licensees applying for a renewal of their license will be required to confirm that they possess a copy of the current Michigan Residential Code book.

If you received your initial license by May 31, 2009, you will only be required to complete the 3-hour Continued Education course to renew your license in 2011 and thereafter.

If you are licensed for 6 years or less after May 31, 2009
:  You must complete a minimum of 3 hours of continuing competency activities per year, and a total of 21 hours in each 3-year cycle.

If you are licensed for more than 6 years:  A licensee must complete 3 hours of continuing competency activities during a 3-year cycle.  The 3 hours must include 1 hour of codes, 1 hour of safety and 1 hour relating to changes in construction and business management laws.

Increase penalties:  Effective December 21, 2007, penalties were increased for a person practicing as a Residential Builders or M&A Contractor without a license.  The increased penalties are:
-- First Offense:  Misdemeanor.  Fine of $5000 to $25,000, or prison for not more than 1 year, or both.
-- Second and Subsequent Offense:  Misdemeanor.  Fine of $5000 to $25,000, or prison for not more than 2 years, or both.

How do I apply for the license?
You will still need to pass the exam through PSI Examination Services.  Go to www.psiexams.com or call 1-800-733-9267 to schedule your appointment.  With your passing test results, you will receive an application for the Michigan Residential Builders License.

Include a copy of your Certificates of Completion showing that you have completed the 60 hour education requirement with your application.

The cost of the license is $225.00 for a three-year period.  During this three year period, you will be required to complete 21 hours of continued education, with at least 3 hours completed each year.

EXAM REGISTRATION AND SCHEDULING PROCESS

The minimum passing scores on the 
Business/Law exam is  72% (36 out of 50) and Practices/Trades is 73% (73 out of 100).

The Michigan Residential Builders License exam is now available weekly in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Southfield, Gaylord and Marquette. The cost is $100 for both parts of the exam: Business/Law and Builders Practices.

The Business/Law exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and you have 1hour and 15 minutes to complete this portion.  The Builders Practices exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions and you have 2 and 1/2 hours to complete this portion. You must answer 73% correct to pass.

All exams will be given by computer. You do not need any computer experience or typing skills to take the exams. You will be given a tutorial before you start.

Your results will be mailed to you from Nevada the next business day and should arrive in 3-5 business days.
