Pearson Vue Examination and Results

All examinations will be given by computer. You do not need any computer experience or typing skills to take the exam. You will be given a personal introduction to the testing system, along with a lesson before you start your exam.

Plan to arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment in order to verify your identification, have your photo taken and allow for time to sign-in. You must present two valid forms of identification before you will be allowed to test. At least one form must meet the following criteria:

• The confirmation number you received when you made the exam reservation
• Current, valid government-issued photo identification (drivers license, state-issued I.D. card or military I.D.)
• The name on the government-issued photo I.D. must be the same as the name used to register for the test
• You must have a current photo and your signature.

Two examinations are given for each license line: the Trade exam and the Business and Law exam. A passing score for all construction examinations is 70% correct. You must achieve a passing score on both the Trade examination and Business and Law examination to be eligible for a license. Candidates who pass one examination and fail the other need to retake only the failed exam.

You will be allowed to refer to the following resources when taking your exam:

• Minnesota State Building Codes, 2003 Edition
• Minnesota Energy Code - Dept. of Public Services (Chapter 7672 only)
• Minnesota OSHA (specific chapters only)
• Code of Federal Regulations, Title 29, Part 1926, 2003 Edition
• OSHA Excerpts for Contractors, Fifth Edition
• You will receive a printed photo-bearing score report at the end of your exam. The report indicates your overall score and grade.

Applying for a License

After successfully passing the appropriate qualifying examinations, you must apply to the Minnesota Department of Commerce for a license. You can obtain a complete description of the procedure and requirements from their website www.commerce.state.mn.us or by calling 651-296-2488 or 651-296-6319.

License Renewal

In order to maintain your license, you must complete 7 hours of continuing education before your annual license renewal date. A complete list of continuing education courses is available at www.commerce.state.mn.us or by calling 651-296-6319.

You must have at least one hour of Lead Abatement continuing education during your first year renewal.

Exam Registration and Scheduling Process

You must make a reservation to take an exam(s) at least 24 hours in advance using one of the following methods:

- Online - go to http://www.vue.com to reserve a date, location and time using any major credit or debit card. Promissor will send via email a confirmation of the exam date, time and location. You will also be contacted if your choice of date/location is not available.

- Telephone - Call Pearson VUE at 1-877-258-9221 to make a reservation.

- Mail - Complete and mail the Exam voucher request found on the Minnesota construction page on the Promissor website. The voucher is located at the end of the construction handbook.

The cost to take the state exam is $51 per testing session. If you take the Business Law and Trades exams separately, you will have to pay for each testing session. If you take them together, you will only pay for one session.
