FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who Must Be
Licensed?
Anyone contracting for $600 or more
in any of the following trades: basement waterproofing, carpentry,
concrete, excavation, gutters, house wrecking, insulation, masonry,
painting, roofing, siding, swimming pools, tile/marble and building
or
remodeling homes. This includes time and materials.
What About
Continued Education?
You will need to complete continued education
to renew your license every three years, however, the State of
Michigan has not yet approved the rules surrounding continued
education courses. They are not available from any provider
yet. We will have them available as soon as the state begins
allowing them. Any CE completed before the State
approves the rules will not count.
What happens if I
get caught building without a license?
Effective December 21, 2007, penalties were
increased for a person practicing as a Residential Builder or M&A
Contractor without a license.
First Offense: Misdemeanor. Fine of
5000 to $25,000, or prison for not more than 1 year, or both.
Second/Subsequent Offense: Misdemeanor.
Fine of $5000 to $25,000, or prison
for not more than 2 years, or both.
What do I do after
I complete the 60 hours of required education?
Getting licensed in Michigan is now a 3-step
process:
Step #1: Complete
the 60 hours of education.
Step #2: Send
your license application, along with your Certificates of Completion
to the State of Michigan. Be sure to include the verification
form that we provide in the class and the licensing fee.
Step #3: It can take
as long as ten weeks for the State to approve your license.
Once they approve it, you can then schedule your exam through PSI
Examination Services. PSI will not allow you to schedule your
exam until they hear from the State of Michigan regarding your
approval.
