Three steps to obtain your Home Improvement License in Maryland:
1.  submit your exam and registration with two year's of verifiable experience

What Can You Do With This License?

Home Improvement work includes alteration, remodeling, repair or replacement of buildings or parts of buildings used as a residence. It also includes work on individual condominium units.

NOTE:  Any person or business that builds new homes or enters into contracts to sell new homes must be registered with the Home Builders Registration Unit of Maryland, Attorney General's Office.  Contact the Registration Unit at (410) 576-6573.  There is no test required for this license.

What Qualifies as Two-Year's Experience?

Applicants must have at least two years of trade experience, which includes one or more of the following:

  • Participation in a registered apprenticeship program,
  • Employment in performing home improvements,
  • Employment in performing commercial or residential construction, repairs or renovations,
  • Participation in a community service or charitable building or renovation program, or
  • Performing repairs and improvements which require a building permit on one's home or the home of family members.

Experience as a licensed home improvement salesperson for at least two years may be credited as trade experience if the Home Improvement Commission determines that the applicant has gained substantial knowledge of the operation of a home improvement business.

Business experience as a supervisor, manager or owner of a business may be substituted for one year of trade experience based on review by the Home Improvement Commission.

Vocational school training in a building trade or participation in a building trade work-study program may also substitute for all or part of the trade experience.
