Included with our course are all appropriate forms and instructions for registering for the exam. After taking our preparation course, you will need to register for the exam through PSI Examination Services. This is the testing company that the State of Alabama has contracted with to conduct the testing. Below is a brief description of what to expect when registering for the exam.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is an informational course to prepare you for the state examination for the Alabama Home Building license. This course guides you through the registration process for the exam with PSI Examination Services, Inc., the application for the license, and what you must study to pass the exam.
The state exam consists of 80 questions.
Business and Law --- You must study the law and general business information. We have provided a copy of the parts of the law that will be included on the exam. Be sure to read the underlined parts at least twice. We have also included many sample questions similar to the type that are asked on the exam. We cannot provide you with the same exam questions so we make sure the same topics are covered.
Practical Aspects of Building --- Please study all text, sample questions and illustrations in the training material thoroughly, including the International Residential Code Compliance List. It is important that you also review the Glossary of Terms at the end of the manual. You will be tested on terms and definitions.
Use the materials we provide as a guide to the type of questions you will find on the exam. If you have trouble understanding some of the topics or procedures when studying for the exam, we recommend reviewing a good reference book. Two books that we have found to be beneficial when studying are Carpentry & Building Construction by Mark and John Feirer and the International Code Book by the International Code Council. Both books are available in the class or through this website. Just click on "BOOKS" above.

STUDY TIPS AND EXAMINATION INFORMATION
To get a Home Builder's license you must apply for the license, pass an examination, and provide a satisfactory credit report. (Although it is not necessary to apply for the license before taking the examination it is helpful to the Board to have an application on file when the test score comes in.)
There are four ways to request a license application:
- Mail request for a license application, along with a check or money order for $25.00 to:
Home Builders Licensure Board
400 S. Union Street, Suite 195
Montgomery, AL 36130-3605 - Fax request along with a credit card payment of $25.00 to (334) 263-1397.
- Register online at www.hblb.state.al.us with a credit card payment of $25.00.
- Pick up a license packet by coming into the Board's office.
The State of Alabama has contracted with PSI Examination Services, Inc. to conduct the examination on behalf of the state. PSI has provided a candidate information bulletin which has information regarding the examination, how to register for the examination, and where the examination test centers are located. We have included this bulletin in the front cover of this manual and we recommend that you read it in its entirety.
All tests are given by computer unless special arrangements are made for pencil and paper testing.
