Continued Competency 3-Hour Course

This 3 hour continuing competency course is approved by the State of Michigan and fulfills the requirement for those who were licensed before January 1, 2009.   Every licensed builder and M&A Contractor in the State of Michigan will need to take this course to renew their license in May, 2011.  If you were licensed before January 1, 2009, you will ONLY need this course to renew in 2011.

Following are the rules that have been established by the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth.  These rules take effect February, 2010 and supersede any rules that were published in the past.

Our 8-Hour Lead Paint Safety course also qualifies for 8 hours of Continued Education.   This means if you were licensed after January 1, 2009 you can fulfill 8 hours of CE and become certified as a renovator for Lead Paint with one course. 

If you were licensed prior to January 1, 2009, have been licensed less than 6 years, and have NOT been subject to a final order you are required to have 3 hours of continuing competency per license cycle as follows: 1 hour of building codes and laws related to the licensed occupation, 1 hour of safety and 1 hour of changes in construction and business management laws. 

If you were were licensed on or after January 1, 2009, you are required to have 21 hours of continuing competency every 3 years as follows: at least 3 hours per calendar year; a total of 21 hours over a 3 year period; and 3 of the total 21 hours must include 1 hour of building codes and laws related to the licensed occupation, 1 hour of safety and 1 hour of changes in construction and business management laws.

If you have been licensed 6 years or longer, you are required to have 3 hours of continued competency per license cycle as follows:  1 hour of codes, 1 hour of safety and 1 hour of legal issues. 

If you are licensed and have been determined by the department in a final order to have violated this act or a rule adopted under this act, you shall successfully complete during the next complete license cycle the required number of continued competency hours, in addition to the number of hours as stated in the final order, which may be up to 21 hours of activities that demonstrate continuing competency. At least 3 hours of the continuing competency to include 1 hour of building codes and laws related to the licensed occupation, 1 hour of safety and 1 hour of changes in construction and business management laws.

Effective 2009, a licensee shall maintain documentation for at least 5 years of activities counted toward meeting the continuing competency requirements.
